HISTORY
A total of 208 Bentley Continental Sports Soloon cars were built between 14 May 1952 and 22 April 1955. Only 43 of them were left-hand drive cars. In March 1955, the automobile was delivered through France Britannic Automobiles; it has matching numbers. On 01 Mar 1955, our Continental was taken by plane from Ferryfield Airport (London) to Le Touquet in Paris. We are in possession of the ownership-history; the first owner of the car was J. Guiness in Monaco. The original documents, which belong to the car, are of special interest:
Instructions of the firm of Mulliner for the care of paintwork, the upholstery as well as the doors and locks
A list of Rolls Royce service-workshops
Driving instructions for automatic transmission
An insurance card of the "General Accident Fire and Life Assurance" from 1967
1955 Bentley Continental R
The Continental R emerged into a war ravaged world wherein no speed limits existed. There can be no question that the 1949 Cadillac and Oldsmobile greatly influenced the design of the Continental R, but the Bentley’s vastly superior fit and finish, the extra engine size, and the powerful symbology of the Bentley upright radiator grill far surpassed the other cars. When new, a Mulliner Continental R cost about $19,350. The most expensive American car when the Mulliner coupe was produced was the virtually handbuilt 1953 Cadillac Eldorado convertible-at $7,750.00. The Continental R easily exceeded 120 MPH, while it’s nearest competitors generally could go only 100.
Most Continental bodies were constructed by H.J. Mulliner, but Park Ward of London built six bodies, Franay of Paris built five, Graber of Switzerland three, and even Pininfarina built a single body on the R-series Continental chassis. 208 Continental R’s were built.
Most cars were right-hand drive and were sold in Great Britian. Only forty-three were built with left-hand drive, and only nine of these had the automatic transmission, making this example a rare car indeed.
